Radish sambar



(Typical South Indian style)

Sambar is a South Indian dish made with vegetables,lentil,tamarind and a spice blend called sambar powder

Sambar is very popular in Tamilnadu and it is Loved by many people,it contains vegetables,curry leaves,turmeric and many ingredients

Sambar is filled with vegetables,dal and it has many nutritional benefits. Sambar gives a good flavour when sambar powder is added to it

Ingredients for sambar

  • Oil             -3 tbsp
  • Mustard   -1/2tbsp
  • Cumin        -1 tbsp
  • Tamarind    -a small lemon sized
  • Turmeric powder -1/2 tbsp
  • Chilli powder         -1 tbsp
  • Sambar powder      -2 tbsp
  • Asafoetida             -2 pinch
  • Coriander leaves
  • Curry leaves
  • Tur dal/lentils     -1 cup
  • Coconut                -3 tbsp
  • Shallot               - 5
  • Salt as required 

Vegetables we need for radish sambar

Onion,tomato,radish,carrot and drumstick

How to make coconut paste



Add coconut, cumin and shallot to a jar and  just pulse it twice

How to make dal


Add thuvaram parupu/lentils to a pressure cooker. Cook until 4 whistles

How to make radish sambar

Place a pot and pore the oil add mustard, curryleaves,onion,tomato,radish,carrot and drumstick.

Then add chilly powder, turmeric powder, sambar powder and add required salt for the broth and cook for 15 minutes until the vegetable becomes soft.

Add tamarind paste then allow it to boil and add coconut paste, add cooked dal cook for another five minutes until the raw smell of cumin and shallot disappear

Then add coriander leaves, that gives a good flavour to the sambar.

Now sambar is ready to serve

Serve it with white rice which will be a heaven
